HOKAY, THIS IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE!

PART CINCO

Thom burns, and propmptly orders Xas to get sunscreen. The angel helps him put it on his back, the touch clinical and precise. When Thom turns around, eyebrow quirked as if to say well?, Xas looks oddly grateful.

"Aside from a few isolated incidents, I've never particularly enjoyed the sex."

This comes out of left field--except in all the ways in which it doesn't.

Perhaps surprisingly, Thom does blush -- not so red as he usually does, but a faint, natural pink.

"That . . . isn't surprising."

"No?"

Xas smiles faintly.

"You would, it appears, be one of the few to say so."

"It's because I'm smart."

Thom says this with only a little arrogance, a little heavy sarcasm.

"I daresay it might be, at that."

There is a hint of dryness behind his words.

"People who can't tell aren't paying attention to you, Xas."

"There are few who go to such trouble for any man or woman, or so I begin to suspect."

Thom snorts. "Congratulations on catching on."

"I spent a great deal of time learning of humans from books."

Xas laughs gently. Bitterly.

"The real stories are not half so pretty, or so neat. More interesting to observe than to share in, on the whole."
